Compostable VS Degradable
There’s often a lot of debate and misunderstanding in relation to the difference between Compostable, Biodegradable & Degradable. This has come about after companies have been misleading with their advertisements as by stating they’re compostable or biodegradable when the reality is, they aren’t. This ultimately has put a lot of consumers off paying a fraction extra in supporting the planet over fears they may not have the benefits they reap after all, so here’s a simple explanation on the differences…
Breaks down into all-natural components
Can disintegrate in your compost bin at home
Breaks down completely and totally toxic free - NO micro-plastics
Doesn’t harm plant growth
Breaks down into all-natural components, however takes longer to degrade compared to compostable options
No harm to its surroundings
Toxic free - NO micro-plastics
Degradable
Often confused with biodegradable, EVERYTHING degrades, it just takes time
Breaks down through a chemical reaction, often toxic
Could break down into micro-plastics, which can ultimately end up in our food chain
Plastic
Contaminates the ecosystem with micro-plastics
Stays on this earth forever, just in smaller forms
cannot degrade into nature
